SUMMARY:A Coalition for Scholarly Annotation
DESCRIPTION:The Annotating all Knowledge coalition gathered in Portland to begin the work of defining\, designing\, and implementing a common framework for scholarly collaboration. Members of the coalition include publishers\, platform providers\, librarians\, standards makers\, and technologists who share a common interest in annotation of all scholarly content for the benefit of scientists\, humanists\, students\, teachers\, and citizens. The goals of the workshop were to review existing uses of annotation\, discuss anticipated uses\, consider opportunities and challenges from the perspective of both publishers and implementers\, converge on a definition of interoperability\, and identify next steps. SUMMARY:Climate Annotation Workshop
DESCRIPTION:ClimateFeedback.org aims to organize the community of climate scientists to annotate online media and provide readers and authors with in-situ feedback about the scientific credibility of information. Our own Dan Whaley spoke at the Climate Feedback workshop on December 18th. The following morning\, Hypothesis hosted a morning annotation meet-up at the Hypothesis Project HQ @ Pier 26. Attendees joined climate scientists & communication experts at the workshop to learn more about the initiative\, and they attended the morning annotation meet-up to help annotate climate related content and help discover (or build!) features needed for the Climate Feedback project. For more\, visit our companion blog post.

SUMMARY:Annotations at the W3C
DESCRIPTION:A dedicated group of individuals worked diligently toward a web annotation standard — the idea being that annotation is something that will be fundamental to the future of the web and should be interoperable\, and eventually incorporated into browsers. The first chance for a face to face meeting of this new group came during the 2014 W3C TPAC meeting in Santa Clara\, California\, October 27-31. This year also happened to be particularly special in that it was the 25th anniversary of the web and the 20th anniversary of the W3C. \nWe decided to take advantage of the opportunity to capture the insights of some of the key people working on annotation standards\, those who have a historical perspective on how we got here\, and why it’s important — including the inventor of the web and the Director of the W3C\, Sir Tim Berners-Lee\, who mentioned annotation as one of the web’s requirements in his initial proposal in 1989. Learn more and watch the video on our companion blog post.
