SUMMARY:Mark Up the Margin: Free Pre-conference Workshop at OLC Accelerate 2020
DESCRIPTION:Kicking off OLC Accelerate 2020\, Hypothesis held a free workshop on collaborative annotation with members of the AnnotatED community. The workshop started with a “Getting on the same page” introduction from Jeremy Dean of Hypotheses\, followed by “Notes from the field\,” where AnnotatED community members talked about what’s happening with collaborative annotation at their schools\, and participants had the chance to discuss ideas and questions with these experienced practitioners. The main focus of the workshop was a “Discussion\, annotated” hands-on activity to explore\, discuss\, and augment readings on topics shaped by Accelerate 2020 keynoter Flower Darby. We practiced reading together to see firsthand how collaborative annotation can build understanding\, connections\, and community. Visit the workshop blog post to get presentations\, links\, and other resources from the workshop.

SUMMARY:Liquid Margins 17: Sharing the Page: Building Community With Annotation
DESCRIPTION:Members of the #DHReads community join Liquid Margins to talk about how they use social annotation in their digital humanities virtual reading group. Andy Boyles Petersen from Michigan State University\, Arun Jacob from the University of Toronto\, and Hayley Stefan from the College of the Holy Cross share their experiences using Hypothesis as a way of meaning-making and community-building\, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please note that this is a pedagogical discussion on the ways social annotation can aid in understanding texts. SUMMARY:Using Hypothesis Social Annotation in Blackboard
DESCRIPTION:Using the Hypothesis app hosted in Blackboard\, instructors can make PDFs and web-based articles annotatable. Students can then annotate their course readings collaboratively\, sharing comments\, replying to each other’s comments\, and learning in community. Instructors can also create annotation assignments using Hypothesis so that students submit their annotation “sets” for grading. Collaborative annotation assignments are a great way to encourage students to more deeply engage with course content and with each other. In this webinar\, presented in partnership with Blackboard Learn\, attendees will learn how to make readings annotatable using the Hypothesis app\, how to instruct students to submit their annotations\, and how to grade those annotations in Blackboard. \nAnnotate the video transcript while you watch
