Note: The VitalSource integration is currently experimental and only available to select users. If you have interest in testing this feature, please reach out to us!

VitalSource delivers digital content like textbooks and readings both directly and through university bookstores. VitalSource likely powers the digital textbooks in your courses.

You can now take private notes and publicly comment (what Hypothesis calls social annotation) on VitalSource content as you’re reading it.

What you’ll need

To get started, you will need to:

  1. have a VitalSource account
  2. purchase the digital copy of your assigned reading
    • If your bookstore partners with VitalSource, you should do this through your bookstore
    • If your school participates in an Inclusive Access program, you will not need to purchase the book. Simply do not opt out of Inclusive Access.
    • You may also purchase the book from VitalSource directly
  3. log into your learning management system

What to do

The following instructions show you how to:

  1. open a Hypothesis reading powered by VitalSource
  2. log into VitalSource after the Hypothesis classroom app opens

You will likely encounter one of the following scenarios. Please follow along with the video that matches your experience to log in with your own account.

If you still need to associate your student LMS account with VitalSource

Before you use the VitalSource reader with Hypothesis, you will need to associate your LMS student account with your VitalSource account.

Important notes:

  • Make sure you use the account you used to purchase. For example, this may be an account you set up your school email address.
  • Avoid opting out of all cookies. The VitalSource reader makes use of essential cookies to log you in. If you opt out of all cookies, you will log yourself out and be forced to log in again.
  • We recommend you do not skip the association step. You may see an option to “skip this step.” If you choose this, you will still see this prompt every time you open an assignment. You will need to log in with an email either way.

If you have already associated your student LMS account

You may have already associated your LMS student account with your VitalSource account. If so, when you launch your assignment, you will enter the reader directly.

FAQs

How can I view my Hypothesis annotations?

Currently, you can only access your annotations from your social reading assignments. If you access the book directly, it does not load Hypothesis.

We are improving how this works. In the meantime, please ask your instructor to keep assignments open, so you may continue to access them.

Why can’t I see my Hypothesis annotations in my digital textbook?

Currently, you can only access your annotations from your social reading assignments. If you access the book directly, it does not load Hypothesis.

We are improving how this works. In the meantime, please ask your instructor to keep assignments open, so you may continue to access them.

What if my account with VitalSource is handled through my school?

VitalSource allows you to access your content directly through their Bookshelf application. To use Hypothesis over a VitalSource reading, you will need to complete your user account through Bookshelf. Follow the guide here to complete your account.

Why does it say I don’t have access to the book?

VitalSource Book Access Error message

If you think you should have access to a text that you don’t, you may have associated your LMS student account with the wrong user account, which is based on your email address. For example, you may have purchased your books using a VitalSource account attached to your school email. If you then used a personal email to log in, you will be looking at the wrong account.

You may need to merge your two VitalSource accounts into one or modify the email you used for your VitalSource account. Follow the instructions in this guide to update your account information.
