Stay Connected to Every Annotation with Unanchored Annotations
If you’re a regular Hypothesis user, you’ve probably come across an “Orphan”; an annotation that’s lost the text it was originally anchored to on the page. This can happen when a web page changes so much that Hypothesis can no longer find the exact text the annotator selected.

Improved Thread Visibility
We’ve also traditionally shown placeholders when annotations in the middle of a thread go missing. Maybe the owner deleted it, or it’s now hidden from other users. Hypothesis will display the rest of the thread and include a placeholder for the missing annotation.
Introducing Unanchored Annotations
Previously, placeholders weren’t shown when the top annotation of a thread was hidden. To solve this, we’ve introduced a new category: Unanchored Annotations.
Unanchored Annotations include the old Orphans as well as threads missing their top annotations. This means that your replies to annotations, even if the original annotation gets deleted or hidden later, remain visible in the groups where you posted them.
