Who is this article for?
- This article is for web app users who wish to add or remove SSO and email log in options to a pre-existing Hypothesis web app account.
- Signing up for Hypothesis? Please see this article.
- Please note that Hypothesis LMS app users do not need to create accounts and cannot add SSO options to LMS app accounts.
Find your currently-linked SSO accounts
Navigate to https://hypothes.is and sign in. Once you’re able to view the Activity Page, click on the settings gear in the top right corner of the page, and then click “Account details”.

Scroll down on the Account details page to see which, if any, SSO options are currently linked to your account.

Connecting additional SSO options to your account
Any Hypothesis web app account can be connected to multiple SSO options. Simply click on the SSO option you wish to link to your account and follow the steps your SSO provider shows to authenticate your account. Once you’ve done so you can use that SSO option to log into your Hypothesis account.
Adding an email address and password to an account
If your Hypothesis web app account was created using an SSO option it may not have an email address and/or a password associated with it. If you want to be able to log in manually you can add these to your Hypothesis account.
Please note:
- Some SSO providers automatically share your email address with us, in which case we associate it with your account. You can always change the email address associated with your account after it is created.
- Even if your SSO provider shared your email address with us, you will need to add a password to your account to log in without using the SSO option.
- Once an email/password combination has been added to your account, it cannot be removed, only changed.
Removing an SSO option from your account.
In order to remove the SSO option from your account, you’ll need to have already connected a second method of logging in, either with an email address and password, or another SSO option. You must always have at least one method of logging into Hypothesis.
If you have multiple methods of logging in associated with your web app account, scroll down to the “Connect your account” sections of the Account details page and click “Remove” from any SSO options you wish to disconnect from Hypothesis.
