Max Points in Hypothesis-enabled Readings

The Hypothesis LMS app now includes the option to set maximum points for an individual assignment. This feature is currently available for some users in D2L Brightspace and Moodle.

Here’s what you need to know to better understand how max points work in your LMS.

D2L

Availability of the Max Points Feature:

  • The Max Points feature is available only for schools that have installed our upgraded LMS app. (LMS admins: This refers to the LTI 1.3 version of our app. See this help article.)
  • This option appears only when creating new Hypothesis assignments.
  • It will not appear when editing existing Hypothesis assignments.

What happens when you set a max point value:

  • A grade item is automatically created and linked to the assignment. There is no need to create your own D2L grade item.
  • Once the assignment is saved, a corresponding column is created in the gradebook.

Important Notes:

  • Do not manually associate another grade item with the assignment after setting a max point value. Doing so will cause the Hypothesis grading bar to disappear.
  • This feature works even if the Auto Create Grade Items option in D2L is enabled.
  • When the Auto Create Grade Items option is enabled, the max point value you set will take precedence over D2L’s settings (which typically automatically assign a max point value of 100).

Moodle

Availability of the Max Points Feature:

  • The Max Points feature is available only for schools that have installed our upgraded LMS app. (LMS admins: This refers to the LTI 1.3 version of our app with Deeplinking enabled. See this help article.)
  • This option appears only when creating new Hypothesis assignments.
  • It will not appear when editing existing Hypothesis assignments.

What happens when you set a max point value:

  • During assignment setup, the option to allow Hypothesis to add grades to the gradebook is automatically enabled.
  • The maximum grade shown in the assignment’s grade section will match the max point value you set.
  • Once the assignment is saved, a corresponding column is created in the gradebook.

Important Notes:

  • Although the max point value won’t appear when editing the assignment, you can still update it by going to the assignment’s native edit settings page and changing the maximum grade there.
