Citing Hypothesis Annotations

General citation guidance

Though we do not have any formal guidance on the proper way to cite a Hypothesis annotation as a source in a research paper, we recommend including the following annotation information at a minimum:

  • Full name of annotator (if known)
  • Hypothesis username
  • Date of annotation
  • First 20 words of the annotation
  • URL of annotation

You can find the URL of an annotation by clicking the Share icon in the bottom-right corner of the annotation card.

Location of Share icon to generate the annotation URL

If you have a recommended format for citing Twitter posts, this same format will almost always serve a Hypothesis annotation well.

Example citations

Chicago Manual of Style

Format:

Lastname, Firstname (Hypothesis username). Year. “Full text of the annotation up to 20 words.” Hypothesis annotation, Month day, year. URL.
