How to Sign Up for a Hypothesis Account

Who is this article for?

  • This article is intended for users who would like to sign up for an account to use the Hypothesis web app.
  • If you are a student who needs to complete Hypothesis activities within your LMS, you do not need to create a Hypothesis web app account. Instead, you should use the Hypothesis LMS app.
  • For guidance on how to use the Hypothesis LMS app, please refer to our Introduction to the Hypothesis LMS App for Students.

Accessing the Signup Page

To sign up for a Hypothesis account, go to https://hypothes.is/signup. On the signup page, you’ll have the option to create an account using your email address or by signing in through single sign-on (SSO) options such as Google, Facebook, or an ORCID account. Choose the signup option you prefer.

Signing up Using Different Sign-on Options

Email Address

  1. To sign up using the Email Address option, provide the following details:

    • Username – must be at least 3 characters and no more than 30 characters. Accepted characters are letters a-z (lowercase and uppercase), numbers 0-9, periods (.), and underscores (_).
    • Email Address – must be a valid email address. An activation email will be sent to the email address after signing up.
    • Password – must be 8 characters or more
  1. After providing the details listed above, check the box to agree to the Privacy Policy, Terms of Service, and Community Guidelines, then click Sign Up.


Google Account

  1. To sign up using Google, you must use a valid Google account. If you’re already signed in to Google in your browser, simply select the account you want to use for signup.page showing that the google account has been connected to the Hypothesis account
  2. After signing in with your Google account, you’ll be redirected to a page confirming that your Google account is connected.

    You will then be prompted to enter your Hypothesis username. Choose a username between 3 and 30 characters. Allowed characters are letters (a–z, uppercase or lowercase), numbers (0–9), periods (.), and underscores (_).
  3. After selecting your username, check the box to agree to the Privacy Policy, Terms of Service, and Community Guidelines, then click Sign Up.

    Facebook Account

    1. To sign up using Facebook, you will be asked to log in to your Facebook account. If you’re already logged in to Facebook in your browser, simply confirm that you would like to continue with the signup process using your Facebook account.signup page showing a Facebook account connected to Hypothesis
    2. After signing in with your Facebook account, you’ll be redirected to a page confirming that your Facebook account is connected. It will indicate the email address associated with your Facebook account.You will then be prompted to enter your Hypothesis username. Choose a username between 3 and 30 characters. Allowed characters are letters (a–z, uppercase or lowercase), numbers (0–9), periods (.), and underscores (_).
    3. After selecting your username, check the box to agree to the Privacy Policy, Terms of Service, and Community Guidelines, then click Sign Up.

      ORCID

      1. To sign up using ORCID, you’ll be prompted to log in to your ORCID account if you’re not already signed in through your browser.

      2. After signing in with your ORCID, you’ll be redirected to a page confirming that your ORCID is connected.

        You will then be prompted to enter your Hypothesis username. Choose a username between 3 and 30 characters. Allowed characters are letters (a–z, uppercase or lowercase), numbers (0–9), periods (.), and underscores (_).
      3. After selecting your username, check the box to agree to the Privacy Policy, Terms of Service, and Community Guidelines, then click Sign Up.
