Recommended Way to Delete Hypothesis Readings in D2L Brightspace

Who is this guide for?

This article is for instructors or LMS admins using D2L Brightspace. It explains the recommended way to delete Hypothesis readings and what happens if you don’t fully delete them.

To ensure Hypothesis readings are completely removed from your course — and not carried over when the course is copied — we recommend performing a hard delete:

How to Hard Delete:

When you initiate to delete a Hypothesis reading, choose the option:
“Permanently delete both the topic from Content and the associated file or activity from the course.”

This will:

  • Remove the Hypothesis reading from the Content area.

  • Delete the associated external tool link.

  • Prevent the Hypothesis reading and its external tool link from being included in future course copies.

  • Keep the External Learning Tools list clean and free of unused links.

You can view your list of external tools via Content > Existing Activities > External Learning Tools.

If You Only Remove It from Content (Soft Delete)

When you initiate to delete a Hypothesis reading and chose the option:
“Remove the topic from Content but keep the associated file or activity in the course,”

Then:

  • The Hypothesis reading is removed from the Content area, but…

  • The external tool link remains in the course.

  • The external tool link will still appear in course copies.

  • The external tool link remains visible under Existing Activities > External Learning Tools in the content area.

If you’ve soft-deleted a Hypothesis reading and want to fully remove it:

  1. Go to your course.
  2. Click Course Tools > All Course Tools or Other Course Tools > Course Admin in the navigation bar.
  3. Select External Learning Tools.
  4. Under the Links name tab, find the link to the Hypothesis reading you want to delete.
  5. Click the dropdown arrow beside the link name.
  6. Select Delete.
