Selecting VitalSource Texts to Use in the Hypothesis LMS App

Who is this article for?

Select Hypothesis LMS partners can use our integration with texts from VitalSource without having an institutional partnership with VitalSource. The steps below are for these schools.

Hypothesis LMS app users who also use the VitalSource LMS app do not need to follow these steps.

Open https://bookshelf.vitalsource.com/ and then open your Bookshelf. Next to the book you want to check, click the three dots, and then click “Book Details”.

On the Book Details page find and copy the VBID.

Create a new Hypothesis assignment and select the “VitalSource” option.

Paste the VBID into the text area and click the arrow button. If Hypothesis reports that we can access the text (via a green checkmark and a message) then you can proceed with using the text when creating Hypothesis assignments! Open https://bookshelf.vitalsource.com/ and then open the Store. Search for the text you want to use. When you find the text, click on “View Details”.

On the Book Details page, copy one of the eText ISBNs (you may have to try both if the first doesn’t work).

Create a new Hypothesis assignment and select the “VitalSource” option.

Paste the eText ISBN into the text area and click the arrow button. If Hypothesis reports that we can access the text (via a green checkmark and a message) then you can proceed with purchasing the text and creating Hypothesis assignments from it! In some instances Hypothesis doesn’t have access to a certain book. In that case you may get a message saying “Book x not found”.

In this instance, please create a ticket with the Hypothesis Support team. Make sure to copy/paste the title, author, and VBID or ISBN you used in our app. We may not be able to get you access to the book, but we will work with VitalSource to see if it’s possible.
