The Hypothesis LMS Reporting Dashboards allow instructors and administrators using our LMS app to view data on student annotations in their courses and assignments. These Dashboards also house the calculated grades for those LMS assignments that use our LMS Auto Grading feature.
When instructors view these Dashboards we show them a list of student names associated with the LMS assignment. While Hypothesis may show a complete course list of names, different LMSs offer Hypothesis differing levels of access to student rosters, and we may not be able to show the complete roster associated with the assignment every time.
LMS rosters and Hypothesis information
All LMSs
For non-Canvas LMSs, Hypothesis should be able to fetch the complete roster for LMS Courses and Assignments, including students who may not have launched Hypothesis yet. That means that when viewing information in the Reporting Dashboards in either the Course View or Assignment View, instructors and administrators should be see a list of all students who participate in a Course (or, for assignments given to fewer students than are in the whole course, the list of students particular to the assignment).
There may be instances where we’re not able to receive rosters from your LMS. If so, we’ll include the following message on our Reporting Dashboard:
Full roster data for this assignment is not available. This only shows students who have previously launched it.
Canvas LMS instances
In addition to the above, if our Canvas Groups or Canvas Sections integrations are being used on a particular assignment, we’ll instead show the associated group or section roster in the Assignment View of our Reporting Dashboards.
How often does Hypothesis sync with the student rosters in my LMS course?
Hypothesis initially tries to sync the rosters the first time you create or launch an assignment in a course, within 15 minutes of that sync. After that we attempt to re-sync the rosters approximately once a week. Changes to the roster (such as student changes during the add/drop period) are not immediately shown in Hypothesis; they will be reflected after the next sync.
