The Hypothesis LMS Reporting Dashboards allow instructors and administrators using our LMS app to view data on student annotations in their courses and assignments. These Dashboards also house the calculated grades for those LMS assignments that use our LMS Auto Grading feature.
When instructors view these Dashboards we show them a list of student names associated with the LMS assignment. While Hypothesis aspires to show a complete list of names, different LMSs offer Hypothesis differing levels of access to student rosters, and we may not be able to show the complete roster associated with the assignment every time. Please see below for more information on roster availability for different LMSs.
Roster messages
Groups roster last synced on…
If the LMS assignment uses Hypothesis’ integration with LMS Groups (available for Canvas, Blackboard, D2L, and Moodle) then we will attempt to retrieve the student rosters related to all of the LMS groups in the Group Set or Group Category used in the assignment.
Sections roster last synced on…
In Canvas institutions using our Canvas Sections integration, Hypothesis will attempt to retrieve the student rosters related to the Canvas Sections in the course housing the assignment.
Assignment roster last synced on…
In most cases Hypothesis will attempt to retrieve a student roster specific to the assignment, and if successful will use the assignment roster to display names and optionally calculate grades.
Course roster last synced on…
If Hypothesis is unable to retrieve a student roster specific to an LMS assignment or LMS group associated with an assignment then we will retrieve and display the whole course roster. When grading, instructors should be aware that Hypothesis will not be able to tell the difference between a student who should have accessed the assignment but did not, and a student from the course who did not have access to the assignment.
“Hypothesis was unable to retrieve the full student roster for this assignment.”
In some cases Hypothesis may be unable to retrieve a student roster related to the course or the assignment. In these cases we will only show a list of students who have successfully launched the assignment. If Auto Grading is used for that assignment we will be able to sync grades to the LMS gradebook for the students who launched, but we will not be able to sync grades for students who have never launched the assignment. In those cases the instructor will need to manually add grades for the missing students to the LMS gradebook.
How often does Hypothesis sync with the student rosters in my LMS course?
Hypothesis initially tries to sync the student roster when you first create or launch an assignment. After that we attempt to re-sync the roster with the roster available in your LMS once per day, usually in the early morning. Changes to the roster (such as student changes during the add/drop period) are not immediately shown in Hypothesis; they will be reflected after the next sync.
