Troubleshooting Hypothesis Canvas Page Assignments

Before you begin…

Hypothesis has built a feature that fixes certain issues with the Canvas course copy function and Hypothesis-enabled readings made with Canvas Pages. If you have not already read our Knowledge Base article titled Using Hypothesis with Canvas Course Import or Blueprint Courses, please do so before following the directions below.

If you’ve already read our article on Using Hypothesis with Canvas Course Import or Blueprint Courses…

If you or your students are still seeing an error when opening a Hypothesis Canvas Pages assignment: Hypothesis couldn’t find the page in the course

Error message about Canvas Pages

The most common reasons this can happen are:

  • The Canvas Page associated with the assignment has been deleted from Canvas.
  • The Canvas Page associated with the assignment is currently unpublished.
  • The Canvas Page associated with the assignment is used in a module that is currently locked.
  • The Canvas Page associated with the assignment is used in a module that is currently unpublished.

Refer to the steps below on how to confirm which of the causes listed above is the one causing the issue.

  1. Confirm that the Canvas Page exists in your Canvas course site.

From the Canvas sidebar select Pages and confirm that the Canvas Page is available and published:

If the Canvas page is missing, you will need to either re-create the page or get a copy of that page from a different course and then edit the assignment to re-link to the new Canvas Page in your course.

  1. Check if the Canvas Page is used in a module that is currently locked.

Instructors can set Canvas modules to be locked for students until a certain time or until a certain requirement or set of requirements is met. This can be verified by going to Modules > click the  ⋮ or vertical ellipsis across the name of the module and click Edit.

Locked Module

If the Canvas Page used in the assignment is contained within this locked module, the Canvas Page assignment won’t launch for the student until they meet the requirement(s) to unlock the module.

  1. Check if a module containing the Canvas Page is published and if the Canvas Page itself is published within the module.

Whenever a Canvas Page is used in a module, confirm that the module and the Canvas page in the module are both published. You can check this by going to Modules and verify if there is a checkmark across the module and the Canvas Page in the module.
