Annotations in an Assignment

Annotations in a Hypothesis assignment can be either:

  • Visible to other users in the course or LMS group
  • Visible only to the author of the annotation

Highlights are always private and are visible only to you. This applies to both students and instructors.

Annotations in Groups

In a Hypothesis assignment, the groups feature can be enabled or disabled. Here’s how this setting affects annotation visibility:

Groups Feature Disabled

An automatically-provisioned course group is used in the assignment. In this case:

  • All members in the course will be in one group.
  • Annotations made within the group will be visible to all members of the course.

    Groups Feature Enabled

Students will be placed in separate groups based on the group set or grouping used in the assignment. In this case:

    • Students can only see annotations from others in their own group.
    • Instructors are part of all groups and can see all annotations.
    • Instructor annotations are only visible to the group where they were posted.

In both cases, annotations can be made fully private. Private annotations will only be visible to the person who posted them.

How to Tell Whether an Annotation is Private

A private annotation will have a lock icon before your name in the annotation card. You can change the privacy of your annotations at any time by clicking on the edit button/ pencil icon at the bottom right of the annotation card. In this example, the annotator has made two annotations in the assignment; one that is visible to everyone in the group, and one that is visible only to the annotator.
