Hypothesis Academy:
Exploring Social Annotation
Exploring Social Annotation is a two-week course designed to introduce you to the Hypothesis social annotation tool and how to design social annotation assignments to best support your students’ learning.
By the end of the course, you’ll have learned how Hypothesis-enabled readings work in your LMS, discussed the benefits and myriad strategies for implementing social annotation, and created instructions for your students to use when completing a social annotation assignment.
If you complete all of the required components of the course, you’ll receive a certificate of completion for the Exploring Social Annotation course.
Learning Goals
1. Analyze the benefits of social annotation in courses
2. Identify the basic requirements needed to use the Hypothesis tool
3. Design an activity which uses social annotation with Hypothesis
Who should participate in this course?
This course is targeted for individuals and schools who are not currently partnered with Hypothesis and would like to learn more. Any instructor or instructional support staff member who is interested in learning more about how Hypothesis social annotation works within the LMS, the benefits of social annotation, and pedagogical use cases and strategies.
How is the course structured, and how much time does it take?
The course runs in completely asynchronous cohorts with opportunities for engagement with facilitators and other educators across multiple institutions.
Course content is delivered using the Canvas LMS (although we’ll provide instructions for Hypothesis use in other LMSs). Official course announcements and messages will also be sent via Canvas. The amount of time each participant dedicates to the course depends on their familiarity with Hypothesis as well as their own learning management system (LMS). Each participant can expect to spend approximately 1.5-3 hours per week on the course.
