Configure LMS to Send Instructor Email Addresses to Hypothesis

Hypothesis relies on being sent the LTI email parameter when an instructor configures and launches an assignment. To enable this the LMS must first be configured to send this parameter at tool launch. Please locate your LMS below for instructions on how to make sure this setting has been configured properly.

Who is this guide for?

  • This guide is for people with administrator-level access to their institution’s LMS instance

Blackboard

  1. Open the Administrator Panel and click on LTI Tool Providers
  2. Locate the Hypothesis tool
  3. Click the down arrow next to the Hypothesis tool name and select Edit
  4. Under Institutional Policies locate User Fields to Send and make sure Email Address is checked ✓
    Checkbox to enable Email Address User Field to be sent
  5. Click the Submit button to save any changes (if necessary)

D2L / Brightspace

  1. Click the Admin Tools gear icon and select External Learning Tools
  2. For LTI 1.1 only:
    1. Select the Manage Tool Providers (Legacy) tab
    2. Locate the Hypothesis tool
    3. Click the down arrow next to the Hypothesis tool name and select Edit Tool Provider
    4. Under Security Settings make sure that Send user email to tool provider is checked ✓
      Checkbox to enable Send user email to tool provider
    5. Click the Save button to save any changes (if necessary)
  3. For LTI Advantage/1.3 only
    1. Select the LTI Advantage tab
    2. Locate and click on the Hypothesis tool name from the list of tools
    3. Under Security Settings make sure that Email is checked ✓
      Check box to send Email to tool provider
    4. Click the Save button to save any changes (if necessary)

Moodle

  1. From Site Administration select the Plugins tab
  2. Locate and select the Manage tools link, typically under Activity Modules > External tool
  3. Find the Hypothesis tool card and click the gear icon to edit
  4. Expand the Privacy section and make sure that Share launcher’s email with tool is set to Always
    Option to Share launcher's email with tool set to Always
  5. Click the Save changes button to save any changes (if necessary)
