Depending on how an assignment was configured, Hypothesis readings in a Blackboard course that has been copied from a previous term may need additional attention before they work properly in the new course.

If the Hypothesis reading…

  • does not use a document stored in Blackboard course files and
  • the reading has not been configured to use Blackboard groups

…then you do not have to do anything else for the reading to work in the new course.

However, if you are using Blackboard course files or groups for any Hypothesis readings you will need to take addition steps before the assignment works in the new course.

Please refer to the flowchart below to help determine if a Hypothesis reading will work properly after a course copy:

Flow chart for Hypothesis readings after Blackboard course copy

Will Blackboard course copy work with Hypothesis-enabled readings?

  • Does this Hypothesis reading use Blackboard Groups?
    • YES — Delete and recreate the reading to use a group set in the new course. See section below for details.
    • NO — Does this Hypothesis reading use a PDF stored in Blackboard course files?
      • YES — Delete and recreate the reading to use a PDF in the new course content files. See section below for details.
      • NO — The reading will work in the new course without any extra steps

Blackboard Groups readings

If your Hypothesis reading was configured to use Blackboard Groups then at this time the copied reading will not work properly. After copying your course you will need to:

  1. Delete any readings that used the Groups integration
  2. Make sure you’ve created new Blackboard Group Sets in the new course
  3. Create and configure new Hypothesis reading (Learn Original or Ultra) to use a group set in the new course

Blackboard Files readings

If your Hypothesis reading was created using a PDF stored in Blackboard course content files then at this time the copied reading will not work properly. After copying your course you will need to:

  1. Delete any readings that used a PDF stored in Blackboard
  2. Follow our instructions for configuring Blackboard course content for use with Hypothesis. Note that even if your old course files have been copied into the new course you will still need to adjust the file permissions as described in the instructions to allow Hypothesis to display them for students.
  3. Create a new Hypothesis reading (Learn Original or Ultra) using the PDF stored in your course content collection
