Using Hypothesis With D2L Brightspace Course Content Files

Note: This feature requires that a D2L administrator has enabled a D2L OAuth 2.0 Hypothesis app integration.

Hypothesis reading assignments can work with PDFs uploaded to the D2L Course Content area. To avoid confusion, we recommend keeping these source files separate from the the Hypothesis reading assignments by creating a separate Module or Unit specifically for the uploaded PDFs.

Create a “Hypothesis PDFs” Module or Unit for uploading source PDFs

Note that this new module or unit is only a repository to upload and store PDFs. You will be creating the actual Hypothesis reading assignments separately in a different module or unit.

The instructions below differ depending on whether you are using D2L Classic Content Experience, or the New Content Experience.

Classic Content Experience

  1. From your course Home page, click on the Content link to navigate to the Content area of your course
  2. In the Table of Contents sidebar, click the Add a module… button

  3. Name your module “Hypothesis PDFs” and press enter to create the new module
  4. Confirm that the Hypothesis PDFs module is visible to students by checking the eye icon in the upper right

  5. You may wish to add an optional description to the Hypothesis PDFs module informing students not to open any of the PDFs from here, and directing them to the appropriate module that contains the Hypothesis reading assignments

  7. Select My Computer, and on the following page click the Upload button to browse to and select your PDF(s) for upload

  8. Click the Add button to upload your selected PDF(s)
  9. Confirm that you see the uploaded PDF(s) listed

Creating Hypothesis reading assignments with D2L-stored PDFs

When creating the Hypothesis reading assignments for your students, we strongly recommend placing these assignments in a separate content module or unit, rather than using the above “Hypothesis PDFs” module. You can then direct students to open the appropriate designated Hypothesis annotation assignment, avoiding any confusion between the actual Hypothesis assignment and the bare uploaded PDF item.

You can find in-depth instructions for creating a Hypothesis-enabled reading in D2L here.

When choosing the document source, you will have the option to Select PDF from D2L.

Each course content module or unit will be shown as a folder, allowing you to browse to “Hypothesis PDFs” and select an uploaded PDF to use in your Hypothesis-enabled reading.
