Using Hypothesis with Canvas Course Import or Blueprint Courses

Depending on how an assignment was configured, Hypothesis readings in a Canvas course that has been imported or copied from a previous term or a Blueprint course may need additional attention before they work properly in the new course.

If the Hypothesis reading…

  • does not use a document stored in Canvas Files and
  • the reading has not been configured to use Canvas Groups

…then you do not have to do anything else for the reading to work in the new course.

However, if you are using Canvas Files or Groups for any Hypothesis readings you may need to take addition steps before the assignment works in the new course.

Please refer to the flowchart below to help determine if a Hypothesis reading will work properly after a course import:

Will Canvas course import or Blueprint course work with Hypothesis-enabled readings?

  • Does this Hypothesis Assignment or Module Item use Canvas Groups?
    • YES — Edit the Assignment, or delete and recreate the Module, to use a group set in the new course. See section below for details.
    • NO — Does this Hypothesis Assignment or Module Item use a PDF stored in Canvas Files?
      • YES — Do students have access to the Files tool in the new course? (See below for further info.)
        • YES — The reading will work in the new course without any extra steps.
        • NO — Launch this Hypothesis reading once in the new course before students begin.

Canvas Groups readings

If your Hypothesis reading was configured to use Canvas Groups then you will need to take the following steps to make sure the reading works properly in the new course:

  1. Make sure you’ve created a new Canvas Group Set in the new course
  2. If the reading is a Module Item:
  3. If the reading is a Canvas Assignment:
    1. Edit the existing assignment
    2. Go to Submission Type, make sure External Tool is selected, and click the Find button
      Location of submission type options
    3. Select Hypothesis from the list of External Tools
    4. Complete the steps to configure the Hypothesis reading, including re-linking to the source document and specifying to use a Group Set in the new course

Canvas Files readings

If your imported Hypothesis assignment uses a PDF stored in Canvas Files then it is important to know whether students have access to the Canvas Files tool in your course.

If students do have access to the Files tool then your Hypothesis readings that use PDFs stored in Canvas Files will work for students without needing any further action.

However, if students do not have access to the Files tool, each Hypothesis reading that uses a PDF stored in Canvas files must be first launched by you (the instructor) once before students can access that assignment.

The Files tool can be found in the left navigation menu. An eye icon with a line through it shown next to the Files tool listing indicates that the tool is hidden from students. If you do not see any eye icon next to the Files listing, this indicates that students are able to access the Files tool.

If you continue to encounter issues or error messages related to Canvas files access, please see Fixing a Broken Canvas File Link for additional troubleshooting.
