Start of a New Term Checklist for LMS App Users

When starting a new academic term (quarter, semester, etc.) there are a few things you can do to make sure students are successful when using Hypothesis for the first time.

Copy your course and any instructor annotations:

If you’ve copied your course, please see our detailed instructions for course copy and Hypothesis. At a high level:

  • Copied Hypothesis readings will still work, but in some instances may need to be launched by an instructor before students access them.
  • If you want to copy over instructor annotations from an old course to a new course please see our article on exporting and importing annotations and our video, too.

Enable Auto Grading where appropriate:

Auto Grading allows instructors to give students participation credit for their annotations and replies. Please see our Auto Grading article for instructions on enabling this new feature on your new and preexisting Hypothesis readings.

Share student resources:

Students are typically more successful when they understand how and why to annotate. Consider sharing these articles with them before their first Hypothesis assignment:

Optionally, you may also wish to share:

Start with annotation simplicity:

We see many instructors start with a variation of our Syllabus Annotation Assignment to introduce students to annotations (and make sure your syllabus actually gets read!). Here are a handful of other examples!
