Course Copy and the Hypothesis LMS app

Different Learning Management Systems (such as Canvas, Blackboard, D2L, or Moodle) handle copying courses in different ways. This guide provides information about how Hypothesis reading assignments are affected after a course has been copied to a new term.

Who is this guide for?

  • This article is for instructors and LMS administrators who are copying Hypothesis-enabled readings from one course to another

Can I copy my annotations from a previous course over with the new course?

LMS course copy functions will typically copy over the Hypothesis tool and reading assignment, but they will not copy over any annotations made in a previous course. If you’re looking to copy instructor annotations from one course to another, please contact us by clicking the Create a Ticket button at the right. We will ask you to schedule a meeting with one of us so we can assist.

Canvas

Course Copy/Import or Blueprint courses

If you are copying your course, or using a Blueprint course, in Canvas, then you can expect that copied Hypothesis readings will work normally with a few exceptions:

  • Readings using Canvas Files will require an additional step to get set up after being copied
  • If you’re using our Canvas Groups integration you’ll need to edit the reading and choose the new course Group Set you’ll be using

Please review our guide Using Hypothesis with Canvas Course Import or Blueprint Courses to know if you need to take additional steps.

Blackboard

Course Copy

In most cases, Hypothesis readings brought over from a previous course after Blackboard course copy will work normally in a new course.

However, if any Hypothesis readings in the previous course use PDFs stored in the course content file collection, the content of the previous course home folder must be copied to the new course as part of the course copy and permissions on the Hypothesis folder must be re-configured again to allow students read-access to the PDFs.

More details and instructions can be found in our guide Blackboard Course Copy and Hypothesis.

Course Export/Import

If the Blackboard course export/import function is used to copy course content into a new course (instead of Course Copy), Blackboard will reset all the Hypothesis readings in the new course back to a state where the instructor needs to set them up again. After importing your course package, you will need to launch each individual Hypothesis reading and reconfigure the assignment.

D2L

Course Copy

Hypothesis readings brought over from a previous course after D2L course copy will work normally in a new course.

More detail and instructions can be found in our guide D2L Course Copy and Hypothesis.

Moodle

Course Copy

When Hypothesis readings are brought over from a previous course via course copy in Moodle, they will function normally in a new course, as long as Deep Linking is enabled in the Hypothesis tool when the Hypothesis assignment was set up.

If Deep Linking isn’t enabled in the Hypothesis tool when the Hypothesis assignment is set up, after course copy, Moodle will reset the Hypothesis readings back to a state where the instructor needs to set them up again. After copying your course you will need to launch each individual Hypothesis reading and reconfigure the assignment.

More detail and instructions can be found in our guide Moodle Course Copy and Hypothesis.

Course Reset

Moodle has a feature called Reset Course which simply empties a current course of existing user data, rather than copies to a new course. Reset Course does not interact with external LTI tools such as Hypothesis, and using this feature will not clear existing annotations from your Hypothesis assignments. If you are using Reset Course rather than course copy, please contact us so we can discuss the options.
